Burger And Fries Please...
Isn't it funny how God takes our likes and dislikes and uses them for His glory? James likes fast food. You know, McDonald's, Wendy's, places like that. He often sees people 'panhandling' outside the burger places. Rather than give them cash, he invites them in to join him for a nice hot meal. As they sit inside to eat their meal, his love for Jesus and for those Jesus sets before him becomes evident. Now, rather than a handful of coins, the hungry person is being fed a hamburger, fries, soda and the bread of life!
Crosses to Australia...
Our Lord uses Karla's internet geekiness and business sense to distribute Disciple's Cross Necklaces to many bookstores in Australia. What does this have to do with helping people in the streets? Well, each order that is shipped to Australia generates income that can be used to give free cross necklaces to homeless folks. It also helps pay for the gifts we give out at the Saturday morning women's Bible studies and during our holiday outreaches.
With The Homeless Church of San Francisco...
Karla
Syrup Girl
Karla goes with the church to The Embarcadero on Sunday mornings and gets to be 'syrup girl'. We serve freshly made pancakes, coffee and other breakfast goodies to 75-120 people every Sunday morning - right after a wonderful time of singing, testimonies, preaching and praying. One of our friends who recently came in from the streets said he remembered lying on the sidewalk at night thinking how great the personal service provided at that service was - right down to that lady who poured syrup on each person's pancakes, sometimes in the shape of a cross, and shared a kind word with each person.
No Boys Allowed!
Karla and Sister April (Pastor Evan's wife) lead a women's group on Saturday mornings at the Embarcadero. We believe ladies need to set aside time to be with other ladies so we can share our joys and difficulties for the purpose of encouraging one another. We share a hot meal, some cake and fellowship, and most importantly - the Word as it applies to our lives with ladies who don't often get to feel like ladies. At the end of the meeting, each lady gets to pick a gift from a bag full of items that women in the streets need and can enjoy. And then, of course, we have our chocolate bag. (Ladies + Chocolate = Big Smiles) Each lady gets to pick from a separate bag of a variety of chocolate treats!
James
16th and Mission
James goes with Pastor Agustin to 16th and Mission for a wonderful time of singing, sharing and fellowship - including a nice hot afternoon meal for everyone there on Sunday afternoons. James used to sing in clubs on the same circuit B.B.King was on (along with a number of other Jazz greats). Now he uses his voice to sing for the Lord and bless our friends on the streets. Agustin shares the word and James shares his real life experiences with people who are struggling with the things God has delivered James from. No one there can say James doesn't know what they're going through. He's been there - literally, at 16th and Mission, wasted and wasting away. Now He is SAVED and SERVING the Lord!
Grace Healing Home
Since James is retired, he also has free time during the week. He is a wonderful support to Pastor Evan and, as a Pastor's Assistant, helps run some of the daily Bible studies, delivers food boxes to hungry people, counsels and encourages men in the men's home (Grace Healing Home) and participates in many other church activities during the week.
Together...
We PRAY! We share about the people we meet and consider what we can do to help. We support, strengthen, love and encourage each other in the Lord. We also serve on the Advisory Board for The Homeless Church of San Francisco together. We attend evening church functions (when Karla's not at work!) together. We also drive through some of the cities toughest areas praying for the people we see. The most important thing we do together is LOVE JESUS WITH ALL OUR HEARTS!
